Don't Forget: |
To give plenty of notice to everybody, the 2010 event will be for images which are a maximum of 1400 x 1050 pixels, this brings us in line with the PAGB PDI at Warwick and many other events. For those who are still having problems (and one or two did last year) this means 1400 pixels horizontal by 1050 pixels vertical, both are maximum numbers but you can have less.
Peter Farnworth This was the first of a new era – the 18 previous events had involved slides, but as the PAGB competition at Warwick had gone digital this year then so did we. Very big learning process, much discussion on how to do it and a lot of stress all round, those clubs who are regular competitors would also have noticed that the closing dates etc had all extended as well – amazing what technology does for you. To err is human but to really mess it up needs a computer so to avoid the mess takes more time on the part of the human who is not that certain about what he is doing. As one of the main purposes of this competition is to find two clubs to represent N&EMPF at Warwick we have always mimicked their rules, however this time as we were uncertain about loading the old second round against the clock, we now had two rounds – a first round now of 16 images, followed by a final for the top 8 clubs of 20 with 10 of them previously unseen. Moving to digital had a very dramatic effect on the number of competitors – 16 which is the third highest there has ever been in the history of the event, the highest since 1997 and 45% up on last year. So, judged by Robert Free, Kathryn Scorah and John Jerstice battle commenced. After eight images the scores were – Worksop – 94, RB – 90, Scunthorpe – 89, Clay Cross & Rolls-Royce – 87, Newark – 86, Nottm & Notts and Derby City – 85, Horncastle – 83, Dunholme – 82, Beeston – 81, Chesterfield – 80, Axholme – 78, Arnold & Long Eaton – 72 and Matlock – 61. Continuing on with the second half of the round – Worksop – 186, Nottm & Notts and Scunthorpe – 173, Clay Cross, RB and Rolls-Royce – 170, Derby City – 165, Beeston – 162, Newark – 159, Horncastle – 155, Chesterfield – 151, Dunholme – 148, Axholme – 146, End of the round and the top eight go through and have to do more do in selecting further images, the rest can just sit back relax and watch the rest of us working. Second round, 8 clubs, 20 images each of which at least 10 are previously unseen. At the halfway point the scores were – Worksop – 116, RB – 114, Clay Cross – 107, Scunthorpe – 105, Beeston & Rolls-Royce – 99, Derby City – 95 and Nottm & Notts – 93. Continuing to the end produced the following final result – Worksop – 231, Scunthorpe – 224, RB – 219 – Clay Cross – 216, Rolls-Royce – 212, Nottm & Notts – 201, Derby City – 196 and Beeston – 192. There then remained the Best Image competition to judge, which came down to Spurn Defences by Keith Naylor of Worksop, if the title sounds familiar it is the one on the front of this year’s Exhibition catalogue – copies still available from Eric Miller. Congratulations again to Worksop, they are going to Warwick for the seventh year on the trot – one day we will find out how you do it. Meanwhile Scunthorpe have joined a pretty exclusive club – they are only the eighth club to represent N&EMPF at Warwick in 19 years, congratulations and we trust that you do well when you get there. Thanks to the team of helpers on the day – the number have expanded so to avoid missing someone out I am not naming names. I hope that the new clubs enjoyed their experience and they will enter again next year with maybe even more because we can cope with them. Peter Farnworth LRPS
